The cannoli is a popular Italian dessert that first originated in Sicily. Served in both Italy and the United States, it’s a great sweet treat to have after a fantastic Italian dinner from a restaurant like Naples Pizza. There are so many variations of a cannoli that you just can’t go wrong. Follow this recipe and enjoy a traditional Italian treat when you want it.
Before you create the sweet cream center, you’ll need to make the perfect crispy shell.
3 cups flour
2 tablespoons light brown sugar
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 tablespoon powdered sugar
2 large eggs
½ cup egg whites
¼ cup sweet white wine
1 tablespoon butter
4 cups vegetable oil
Grab a bowl and put all the dry ingredients together. Mix the dry ingredients and then add the wet ingredients, which includes the eggs, white wine, and butter.
Continue mixing until everything blends together into a dough. Allow the dough to rest for about 10 minutes.
Use your hands to separate pieces of the cannoli dough. Roll pieces into a ball with your hands, use a pin to flatten, and then attach both sides together by sealing them firmly on top of one another with your thumb and pointer finger.
Use a culinary brush to dab a bit of the egg whites over each shell. The egg whites help it keep its shape.
Place vegetable oil inside of a large pot, set it on medium heat, and wait until it begins slightly boiling.
Put the cannoli shells inside of the oil and watch as they become crisp.
Quickly remove from the oil and set aside.
Sweet Cannoli Cream
Now that you’ve made your shells and are waiting for the cream, it’s time to get started so that you can finish this dessert.2 cups ricotta cheese1 teaspoon vanilla extract1 tablespoon cream cheese1 cup powdered sugar1 cup semi-sweet chocolate morsels
Place the ricotta cheese inside of the bowl and slowly start pouring the powdered sugar in the bowl with it.
Using a whisk, mix the ricotta cheese and powdered sugar together, and then slowly add in the cream cheese and vanilla extract. It is normal for the cream to be on the thick side.
Throw in the cup of semi-sweet chocolate morsels and mix them around in the cream.
Pour or scoop your bowl of cannoli cream inside of a pastry bag.
Grab each shell, squirt some of the cream filling inside the openings of each side of the shell, and serve. As a finishing touch, you can sprinkle a small handful of powdered sugar over each cannoli.
This is just one of several ways to make the Italian dessert. If you don’t like chocolate, you can replace the semi-sweet chocolate morsels with just about anything, including sprinkles and nut chunks.
